“Guilded Cage” - 18” x 24”

Thanks to the internet and archival digitization, the type specimens showcasing the hey day of letterpress type are available to the world. I have spent many hours poring over these books looking to identify type in my collection or learn more about type design and letterpress printing.

In the late 1960s and early 70s, graphic design saw a revival of these 19th century design elements. A beautiful example of this revival is Damn Everything But The Circus by Sister Corita Kent.

I became very inspired by this work of Corita’s, and the intuitive collage that still evokes feelings.

In a series of four original cyanotype monoprints, I explored this idea by using digitized type specimens to find source material, which I printed on transparent film and used to expose cyanotype prints.
