Now Hiring Guest Editors!

At the start of the pandemic, Fontlove Studio began printing and publishing a weekly newspaper made up of 10 word stories submitted by readers. This newspaper is produced using 19th century tools and technology, with each letter of each word set by hand from antique metal and wood type and then printed by hand on antique presses. It is then mailed out to subscribers across the country.

The newspaper became a time capsule of the pandemic era with the everyday stories of people experiencing it.

As we move into our new era of life, the New Day newspaper will take on a different shape. Each month, a guest editor will help to collect stories from their networks and communities that highlight voices on a particular issue and in response to a particular prompt. This guest editor will work with the publisher to curate and edit these stories, write the headline for the month, and promote the newspaper to their networks.

The Guest Editor(s) will:

– Work with the publisher to develop a writing prompt for the month
– Utilize relationships and networks to elevate and amplify voices on community issues that deserve attention
– Collect 10-word (or less) stories via that network in response to the prompt
– Work with the publisher on curating stories into a cohesive narrative
– Promote the newspaper subscription to their networks

We will be looking to hire 5-10 Guest Editors. Each editor will choose a month in the coming year to act as Guest Editor. The time commitment is expected to be approximately 8-10 hours over a one month period.

Qualifications or requirements

– Passion for amplifying voices, particularly those that are traditionally marginalized or aren’t part of the dominant narrative
– Experience (formal or informal) as a community organizer, connector, and relationship builder
– Comfort with reaching out to your networks to solicit stories
– Personal and/or professional channels to reach out to for submissions
– Interest in traditional letterpress printing and the history of printing as a medium for social change a plus
