Damn Everything But the Circus Handmade Banner

Damn Everything But the Circus Handmade Banner

In 1970, Sister Corita Kent published Damn Everything But the Circus: a Lot of Things Put Together. Sometimes the quote is attributed to e.e. cummings but I think it’s an amalgamation of a few sources. Either way, it felt like an acknowledgment that all good things are messy, loud, colorful and joyful. This one-of-a-kind banner was created by letterpress-printing on transparent film using my collection of vintage wood type, and then using that film to expose a fabric banner treated with a cyanotype solution. I then hand-appliquéd color patches and finished it with a dowel rod for hanging.
